Leeds University Union History Society is one of the largest Arts societies at the University of Leeds. We throw various types of events throughout the academic year for our members with the aim of making their time at Leeds enjoyable and unforgettable!

History students, including IHP and Joint Honours students, have roughly 6 contact hours a week. This can make it difficult to meet and befriend fellow History students. That’s where HistSoc steps in! We organise regular events throughout the year, from pub crawls to Christmas balls, to help you settle in, socialise and make the most of your time at University. For our sporty members, we also have a netball and football team that play weekly matches against other societies.

In the last few years, HistSoc has gone from strength to strength. Our membership continues to grow, with over half of the school’s undergraduates as part of the society. Over the past five years, we have received significant recognition at the annual Leeds University Union Riley Award's, winning ‘Best Departmental Society’, runner up for ‘Best Society in the entire Union’ and most recently, a nomination for ‘Best Event’ for our Careers Networking Dinner.

There were many highlights for HistSoc this past year including our annual Christmas Ball which was held at the Royal Armouries in Leeds. We took our members 'Down the Rabbit Hole' with a fantastic Alice in Wonderland themed evening! After previous trips to Berlin and Prague, in April we took our members to Krakow which was definitely a weekend to remember! We remained true to our Leeds roots by completing not just one, but two Otley runs – boot camp and pirate themed, as well as holding many socials – one of which was to a secret location!

Although HistSoc loves to socialise, we also know that getting a top degree is a priority for our members. We therefore provide opportunities for our members to get involved in various academic events hosted by the School of History. We keep you updated about these events such as guest speakers, skills workshops and student-led debates through our weekly news email. Additionally, we promote employability events hosted by our sponsors and indeed hold our own annual Careers Networking Event which allows students to connect with potential employers.

The History Society is a massive part of many students' lives at Leeds! If you like the sound of what we have to offer then check us out on our social media platforms where you’ll find info about upcoming events. We look forward to meeting you soon!
